How to migrate your site to TinkerHost?
Welcome to TinkerHost! Migrating your site is a fairly easy process, as your computer does most of the work!
To start, you will need to know the following:
- A copy of the files from your old webhost. You can download these files over FTP, or request a backup from your old provider.
- If your website uses a database, you will need the .sql backup files from your old host. You can get this by opening PHPMyAdmin and selecting the “Export” tab. Sometimes these exports are placed in archives (.sql.gz, .sql.tar, etc), so be sure that you extract any archives before continuing.
Please note that if you are using WordPress, the official way to migrate your site is by following the steps below. Most backup plugins do not work well on our hosting, and you are not allowed to upload the large files required by backup plugins in order to migrate your site.
To upload your files, login to FTP (We recommend FileZilla), and copy the contents of your site into the htdocs folder. PLEASE NOTE that you should not upload a zip file, but each individual file instead. If you are using FileZilla, you can just drag and drop the files and folder from your computer to our server.
To upload your database, you first must create it in the control panel. In the control panel, locate “PHPMyAdmin” and create a new database (You probably want to use the same name as the name that was used with your old provider). Then, open the database you just created. At the top of the screen, select the “Import” tab, and upload your .sql file to the application. Note that once you submit the form, the website may seem unresponsive while it uploads your file. Depending on the size of your backup, it can take anywhere from one minute to ten.
