Why can't I create an MX record on my subdomain name
Unfortunately, we don't support adding MX records on subdomains that you add to your free hosting account. There are a few exceptions to the rule, so don't give up hope quite yet!
Exceptions to the rule
If you create (or have created) a new TinkerHost hosting account with a subdomain, that domain is treated as an "Addon Domain" instead of a subdomain by the system, so you can create an MX record for it. In other words, if the domain you created your account with (The first domain on your account) is a subdomain, our system does not treat it as a subdomain, so you can add MX records to it.
Summary of the domains you can use with MX records
- The first domain on your account (Any type of domain [custom or subdomain] as long as it was the domain you created the account with)
- Any custom domains you buy and add to your account (Such as mywebsite.com) under the "Addon Domains" or "Parked Domains" section of the control panel. Don't have a custom domain? Find one here
So can I still receive emails with a subdomain?
Because we restrict the use of MX records for subdomains on our platform, you cannot receive mail with your custom domain, with the one notable exception listed below.
Alternative way to receive emails with a subdomain
If you own the base domain that is used for the subdomain (For example, if the subdomain is "sub.mysite.com", and you are the owner of the domain "mysite.com") you can use a 3rd part DNS provider (We recommend Cloudflare - Setup Guide) to create MX records for your subdomains.
Unfortunately, if you are using a free subdomain (Such as "thsite.top"), there are no workarounds at this time.
What about sending emails? Can I send emails from my domain without an MX record?
Yes! MX records only tell incoming mail where it should be routed to. You can still send email from your domain without an MX record present. (Please note that the PHP mail() function is disabled on free hosting due to abuse. Please use SMTP instead. The PHP library PHPMailer is helpful when using SMTP).
