Don't want to change the nameservers of your domain? Is your domain registrar not accepting TinkerHost nameservers?
Starting earlier this month, we introduced support for linking domains to existing accounts using CNAME records!
One quick note before getting started
If you are planning to add your domain to a new account, you will need to create the account using a free TinkerHost subdomain first, then follow along with the rest of this article.
To get started, first choose whether you would like to add your domain as an Addon or Parked domain. In short, an Addon domain will receive its own root directory (It will serve unique files), and a Parked domain will share a root directory with an existing domain on your account (Recommended if the "One Quick Note" above applies to you). Don't know which to pick? Read more about the difference here.
Once you have decided to use the Addon or Parked domain option, login to your TinkerHost control panel (Open the client area, and select the account you want to add the domain to, then click the "Control Panel" button). Once the panel loads, scroll down, and select "Addon Domains" or "Parked Domains" from the list. Enter your domain name in the form, and submit the form.
If the domain is added to your account successfully, you're done!
If an error message appears (Which is expected, don't worry!), look for the line in bold that says something like the following:
Alternatively you can create a CNAME record pointing 8eb00c180b329e76179cd355640573fe.<your-domain>.com. to ns1.byet.org.
Using your DNS Zone Manager (This will be the company who your nameserver records are currently pointing to. If you are using default nameservers, this will be your domain registrar), open the CNAME tool and add the DNS record shown below. (DO NOT use the CNAME tool found in the TinkerHost control panel; It will not work. You need to use the CNAME tool offered by your DNS Zone provider as explained above).
Record Name (Or "Source"): The text from the control panel, not including your domain name (Example: 8eb00c180b329e76179cd355640573fe
Domain Name: The domain name you are trying to add (Example: domain.com
)
Destination: ns1.byet.org
Once the CNAME record is set, try adding the domain to your account again. If it fails, use a DNS checker (Like this one offered by Google) to ensure that the record is set correctly. Feel free to open a new topic on this forum if you need assistance, we are happy to help!
Once your domain is added to your account, there is one more thing to do! While the CNAME record is used to verify your domain with us, it cannot be used to show your website to visitors. In order to configure your domain to show the web content hosted with us, you need to do one of the following:
- Using DNS: Set an "A" record with your DNS Zone Provider (The same company you just set the CNAME record with). You should use "@", your domain name, and the IP address found in the client area when setting up this record.
- Using Nameservers: If your domain registrar allows you to change your nameservers after your domain is added to your TinkerHost account, you can set them to
ns1.thsite.top
and ns2.thsite.top
.
After that, just wait for DNS propagation, and you are all set! Need help? We'll help you out; Just create a new topic on the forum!
